Attention Patriots, Loyalists, Neutralists! Gather as some of the most influential people on both sides of the war give their most convincing arguments as Odyssey Program’s middle school students debate! Listen as Samuel Adams, Patrick Henry and Thomas Paine try to convince the neutrals to join the Patriot cause. But be warned, Loyalists such as King George III also have some tricks up their sleeves. In the debate Odyssey’s middle school students had, students were assigned to argue from a Patriot or Loyalist perspective or to be neutral. Passionate and persuasive speeches were created, then were delivered in front of the crowd of Neutralists. The goal was to persuade the Neutrals to chose a side in the war, either join the Americans or British. While people were speaking, the crowds cheered and booed, depending on which side the speaker was on. Neutralists had to create posters with the word “Patriot” on one side and “Loyalist” on the other. The posters were constantly flipping back and forth as the neutrals listened to the good points both sides were making. The Patriots and Loyalists were raising their posters that advocated a famous person on their side high in the air. In the end, most neutrals joined the Loyalist cause, but the Patriots still have history on their side!

Odyssey 678 dissected owl pellets to start our new ecology unit. We learned that owls eat an animal whole and cough up what they can't digest which is bones and hair. We took a big ball of what looked like just hair and dissected it! I figured out that there was a lot more than just hair it was a bunch of bones covered by hair. In my little part of the ball the was a skull if a little mouse. It was actually really cool because afterwards we got to put the all the bones together and make the mouse again. Now we will continue our ecology unit and I am sure that we will have many other great and exciting experiments that will be interesting and fun!

Many years ago, two of the most powerful figures on both sides of the reformation fought each other face to face. In October of 1518, a protestant named Martin Luther was summoned to Rome to face the might of the Roman Catholic church. He was given an opportunity to speak about his beliefs before Cardinal Cajetan, a dedicated and wise cardinal in the Catholic church. Their disagreements degenerated into a shouting match. To simulate this event, two teams were selected to represent the two sides of this conflict in a contest using the ancient art form of rap battle. They were to use the 42 points written by Cajetan to counter the ninety-five theses written by Martin Luther. Representing Martin Luther were the Spanish Royals. Cardinal Cajetan was represented by Rome, very fittingly. The two victims were given a week to prepare. On Wednesday, February fourth, the two teams performed their rap battle in front of all of 6-7-8. And, of course, they were costumed. Though no clear winner arose, it was an exciting and educational experience for all involved.

I never thought that I would become an intestine. Aren’t these organs part of me? Today in science, we played The Circulation Game, a simulation where we learned how the blood in the human body helps to distribute nutrients and oxygen throughout the body. Some of us took on the roles of red blood cells, which carry nutrients, oxygen, and carbon dioxide throughout the body. They travel from the heart to the lungs, where they exchange carbon dioxide for new oxygen that was just breathed in. Next, the blood cells travel to the liver where they are filtered for toxins and for waste. Some red blood cells take a different route to the kidneys, intestines, and other muscles and organs throughout the body.

The path of these cells is vital to the survival of humans. They act as couriers, transporting many fluids and important elements and molecules to make sure that the body functions properly. This simulation helped us understand more about the body, and now we know better how we get nutrients and oxygen, and how we dispose of wastes like carbon dioxide. We learned how important it is to have these systems of organs and cells flowing through our body, and how devastating it would be if they stopped doing their part!

This term in science we are learning about the human body systems. This week we took on the skeletal and muscular system. For further observation we became scientists and dissected chicken wings. By exploring the skeletal and muscular system of a chicken we were able to make comparisons between the chicken wing and a human arm. It was clear after the project was introduced that certain students were not as excited to participate and be involved as others. Many students had their stomachs challenged as they witnessed the dissection processes. Those who wanted to work on the chicken wing were able to experiment with the tools, a pair of forceps and dissection scissors. While everyone else was able to provide the directions and make observational notes. In the end the activity was a great learning experience and the chicken wing undertaking was a great visual representation and reference to the human anatomy.

This week, teams finalized their Time Machine Projects, and presented to the rest of the school. Students gathered their Time Machine Passports and traveled in groups to each team, where they learned about specific events during the Dark Ages, categorized by different themes. Some prominent themes were Famous Women of the Middle Ages, A Day in the Life of a King, Cultural Innovations and The Science of Cathedral Building. Each team presented their 2-4 minute infomercial, a poster printed on the Large Format Printer, and a brochure. Team captains were also in charge of presenting a sales pitch, to sell their Travel Company to visitors. Some students even dressed up in business attire, to look even more professional and to sell their Time Travel package. If they didn’t succeed, their company would be shut down and they would be out of jobs! As students traveled to each room, they were encouraged to pay attention to all of the good things that happened in the Dark Ages. Afterwards, each team wrote a detailed informative essay about the Dark Ages, asking this important question: Were the Dark Ages really dark? Most students came to the conclusion that the Dark Ages were not as dark as they seem, and they were really filled with many important scientific, artistic, and literary advancements.
