Odyssey Oregon Trail Field Study

This field study will be an enriching culmination to the 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students’ study of the Oregon Trail. The four-day trip studies the Oregon Trail experience in Eastern Oregon and Washington. The field study will give students the opportunity to integrate, apply and extend what they have learned in the classroom. The trip will emphasize living history topics related to the Oregon Trail.
Tuesday, May 10
On Tuesday the students will depart school after lunch and go to Emigrant Spring State Park (our lodging location for the trip). Once students arrive at the park they will unpack and eat dinner. Following dinner the students will all participate in a group program.
Wednesday, May 11
Wednesday morning the students will eat breakfast and depart for the Whitman Mission in Washington. There they will take part in four rotations – film and ranger talk, mission site activities, museum activities and memorial & gravesite activities. The students will also eat lunch while at the mission. Mid-afternoon they will return to Emigrant State Park for two rotations with the park rangers (exact plans TBD). Following dinner the students will watch a movie before bed.
Thursday, May 12
Thursday morning the students will eat breakfast and depart for the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center in Baker City. There they will take part in four rotations – wagons, ho!, pan for gold, diorama and museum. The students will also eat lunch while at the mission. Mid- afternoon they will return to Emigrant Stage Park for two rotations with the park rangers (exact plans TBD). Following dinner the students will enjoy dancing with local fiddler players before bed.
Friday, May 13
Friday morning the students will pack up their tents before breakfast. Following breakfast they will depart for the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center in The Dalles. There they will take part in three rotations – indoor museum activities, decision at The Dalles activity, outdoor activities and journaling. The students will eat lunch at the Discovery Center. They group will depart for Hayhurst returning around 5:00pm.
